Sodium valves... my car has sodium valves.
and an interesting VVT setup, and integrated exhaust manifolds.
in a Kia... in a goddamn kia.
I fear for the Lambda II in the used market/angry forums about reliability/repair costs in 10-15 years.

tbh tho... every new car is gonna be a total nightmare in 15 years
too much tech

But its a very good engine, I just hope enthusiasts keep in mind its a complex engine, this aint no LS!

the only thing I would be slightly concerned about is the hollow exhaust valve head becoming “tuliped” with age. Other than that, integral cast exhaust manifolds are fairly common now; the Pentastar and GM 3.6 V6 use them as well as about half of the EcoBoost engine family.

no doubt :) modern engines are just beyond me... i like good old fashioned mechanical engineering... none of this computer stuff
i like an engine that can be fixed by hitting it with a hammer and calling it names me mum wouldnt aprove of

So does VWAG in some engines.
I guess the VVT could be an issue eventually if the timing chain isn’t of the best quality...

Percussive maintenance is the best kind of maintenance

those BorgWarner CTA phasers were a bit problematic about 10-15 years ago, but they seem to have been worked out.

I’m more impressed by the presence of a spare tire than the sodium filled valves. Those engines must be getting hot.

Space saver but still, score!

I remember learning about sodium filled valve in school. Mercedes has been doing it for a looooong time.

I know, but this is a kia!
Also, I think this thing has something special (sodium filled all the way)

I feel like sentences ending with KIA and an exclamation mark have been very common throughout its history. Mostly in a bad way but more recently in a good way.

Hopefully I’m lucky and this engine is very reliable

I have a 1973 John Deere, and it reacts well to hammer therapy

Courage
!
I imagine once your situation improves you could still find one quite cheaply.
